The year 2020 carries a cutting-edge tag on it, especially in the automotive world. We expect trailblazing models packed with super cool features. Below we explore ten big-ticket cars coming in 2020 and the reasons for their high price.
1. Aston Martin Valkyrie
Codenamed AM-RB 001 and Nebula, the Valkyrie is a track-oriented hypercar jointly manufactured by British automobile company Aston Martin and Red Bull Racing. Mercedes-AMG One is Valkyrie’s main rival. The car is available in two variants: the road and track versions.
Its production is limited to 150 units, each priced at US$3.2 million. The road version has a 6.5-litre V12, which delivers 843 kW power and has an acceleration of 0 to 97 km/h in 2.5 seconds.
Valkyrie AMR Pro, the track only variant, makes use of the same engine as the road version; however, it has a higher top speed of 402km/h.
2. Koenigsegg Jesko
Swedish auto manufacturer Koenigsegg announced the successor of the Agera in March 2019. It named the mid-engine sports car “Jesko” to honour the company's founder Jesko von Koenigsegg.
The car makes use of a 5.0-litre engine with a power output of 995kW (1,193 kW on E85 biofuel) and peak torque of 1573 Nm. It teams up with a 9-speed multi-clutch transmission controlled by a computer. Just like the Aston Martin Valkyrie, the Jesko is available in two variants: high downforce and low drag.
The top speed of the high downforce variant is yet to be revealed. The low drag will have a peak velocity of over 483 km/h. The Swedish carmaker will produce 125 units only with each going at a price of around US$2.8 million.
3. Mercedes-AMG One
This German automobile nameplate is synonymous with expensive price tags. Mercedes-AMG One will be the latest addition to the Mercedes premium auto category.
This plug-in hybrid sports car by Mercedes borrows some Formula One technology, with F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton among those working on its development. Only 275 units will be produced; all sold out as of this writing. The powertrain has a projected power of 775-918kW.
The car will have five motors, four electric and an internal combustion engine, mated to a single-clutch automated manual. Its carbon fibre bodywork makes it a very lightweight car.
Performance-wise, it has a top speed of over 350km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in under 2.5 seconds. The car sells at US$2.72 million.
4. McLaren Speedtail
The Speedtail, a hybrid sports car by British manufacturer McLaren, is an upcoming addition to the McLaren ultimate series. It features a 4.0L V8 engine and 773kW hybrid powertrain.
The car makes use of a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and has a maximum speed of 402.3km/h. It is among the fastest McLaren cars with an acceleration of 0 to 299km/h in 12.8 seconds. The Speedtail is limited to only 106 units, all sold out, priced at US$2.1 million.
5. Rimac C Two
The Rimac C Two is a fully-electric sports car by Rimac Automobili with a claimed peak velocity of 415km/h. Four electric motors located at each wheel generate power. The Rimac C Two runs on a Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide 120kWh battery.
The car can accelerate from 0 to 97km/h in 1.85 seconds and has an electric range of 650 km. Production is limited to 150 vehicles, which were all sold out three weeks after its launch at a price of about US $2.0 million.
6. Lamborghini Aventador SVJ roadster
The 2020 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster (Super Veloce Jota) is a variant of the LP770-4 SVJ. It has a naturally-aspirated V12 engine mated to a 7-speed Independent Shifting Rod transmission. The engine generates power of up to 566kW and torque of 720 Nm.
The car can move from standstill to a speed of 100km/h in 2.9 seconds and has a top speed of 351km/h. The car’s production is limited to only 800 units, each at $573,966.
7. Tesla Roadster
The 2020 Tesla Roadster is a fully-electric sports car succeeding the 2008 Roadster. It claims an acceleration time from standstill to 97km/h of 1.9 seconds (2.1 seconds for the base model), making it one of the fastest cars in the world come 2020.
The top speed is expected to be over 400km/h. While the base model has an expected price of US$200,000, the first 1000 units to be produced, i.e., the Founder’s Series, will go for $250,000.
8. Polestar 1
This hybrid sports car by Volvo’s performance car brand Polestar, which has since become an independent manufacturer, is next on the list. The car has a plug-in hybrid powertrain. With a battery pack of 34kWh, it has a 150km range.
Two electric motors drive the rear wheels while a petrol engine drives the front wheels. They have a combined power output of 447kW and a torque of 1000Nm. The car's starting price is US$155,000.
9. McLaren GT
The new upcoming GT makes use of a twin-turbocharged V8 engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission system. The engine has a power output of 456kW and torque of 630Nm. It has a top speed of 326.7km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 200km/h in 9 seconds.
The sports car is set to be the company’s first dedicated grand tourer. Pricing starts at $210,000.
10. Ferrari F8 Tributo
The F8 Tributo is a mid-engine sports car upgrade to the 488. It has a 3.9-litre V8 that delivers 530kW and 770Nm torque. The F8 Tributo makes use of a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It can do a 100km/h from standstill in 2.9 seconds.
It is also available in an open-top variant: F8 Spider. Each unit costs around US$276,000.
