What's New With The 2021 Toyota Hilux In Australia?

In the pickup truck category, few makes and models command as much respect as the Toyota Hilux. This tried and tested workhorse has been around for decades now, and the latest 2021 models are already making their way onto Aussie streets.

There’s plenty that’s new with the Hilux, most notably its most recent facelift. From front to back, the truck now sports a brand-new grille, bumper, and head and tail lights as well. Even the interior feels pretty unique, with added creature comforts, and more importantly, new tech and connectivity.

What makes it more exciting is that the updates are not limited to superficial trimmings. Look under the hood, and you’ll see that the latest Hilux also packs more power than those that came before it.

As you can see, there’s a lot that’s new with this truck. So in this article, we’re going to take a brief look at what you can expect to see in the latest Toyota Hilux.

2021 Toyota Hilux Trim Levels

First, let’s talk about the different versions of the 2021 Toyota Hilux you’ll see on the road. Here are the trim levels for this model:

As can be expected, all versions of the 2021 Hilux come in petrol and diesel options. For the most part, you’ll have a choice of 6-speed auto or manual transmissions, though some of the Workmate versions do come with 5-speed transmissions instead.

What Makes the 2021 Hilux Unbeatable?

So, what makes the Hilux such a formidable truck in 2021? Well, it seems to boil down to two things: better tech and more power. Toyota has gone all out in updating both aspects, which is what makes the 2021 Hilux so impressive.

Its interior has stepped up in terms of comfort, but not by that much. Still, there are a lot of impressive new features inside. As you take your seat, you'll notice the 8-inch touchscreen, right in the centre of the dash.

As you can imagine, you’ll be able to enjoy better in-car entertainment, not to mention better connectivity with your iPhone or Android.

Touchscreen aside, they’ve also updated the instrument cluster design which also includes a digital speedometer.

The excellence of the new Hilux is that it's not all about power and performance anymore. For example, you can drive with much more confidence thanks to all the tech-enabled safety features the truck has to offer. They include lane departure warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection and even adaptive cruise control.

With its reverse camera and front and rear parking sensors, you can worry less about bumping into things. They might not sound like much, but when you’re trying to manoeuvre a powerhouse like the Hilux around tight spots, those features will come in very handy.

The new Hilux also rides a lot more comfortable than older models. They’ve lengthened the rear suspension enough to make riding much smoother, especially for anyone sitting in the back seat. Of course, if you’ve got cargo in the back instead of passengers, you can expect it to go through a lot less turbulence throughout the ride as well.

The cherry on top are the aesthetic upgrades. The new grille and LED lights on the outside, plus the extra storage space (and cupholders!) on the inside add a thoughtful value-added touch to the whole vehicle.

On some models, you’ll even enjoy the electric driver seat’s adjustments! Not exactly a key feature, but still a nice-to-have addition to the whole mix of updates by Toyota.

What Engine Is in the 2021 Toyota Hilux?

No matter what trim level you’re talking about, the Hilux is all about raw power. Another reason the new Hilux is so remarkable is that Toyota has even updated the engine! And let’s be honest here, one of the main reasons anyone loves the Hilux so much is because of how powerful it is.

So let’s take a quick look under the hood.

The 2021 Toyota Hilux's turbo-diesel engine is quite a leap forward from previous ones. On the lower end of the spectrum, you'll get the 2.4-litre engine and a 2.8-litre on the higher-end; both of which come in manual or automatic transmission options.

As far as the 2.8-litre engine is concerned, you can expect 15% more power than ever before. We’re talking about a maximum output of 150 kW of power and a whopping 500 Nm of torque!

Even on the models that carry the 2.4-L engine, we're looking at outputs of 110kW power and 400 Nm torque.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to trucks like the Toyota Hilux, there’s no doubt about how well it’ll serve as a workhorse. The great thing about the 2021 model is that it’s taking a few steps into the future with better tech and comforts, making it perfect as a dual-use vehicle.

Use it in the daytime at the job site or off-road, and drive the family around to dinner at night. The new 2021 Toyota Hilux is ideal for both functions.
