The Alfa Romeo MiTo, which is also labelled as Type 955, is a front-wheel-drive three-door super-mini car designed by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo. It was presented for the first time in 2008 in Milan, Italy. The car derived its name from the combination of Milan and Torino, having been designed in Milan and manufactured in Torino. MiTo stayed in production from 2008 to 2018. Alfa Romeo launched the car in Australia in July 2009. It was meant to give the customers a unique driving experience, with high level of equipment and safety. In Australia, the MiTo was initially launched in two variants, namely the standard MiTo and the MiTo Sport.
MiTo was sold throughout its life from 2008-2018 in a single generation, sharing the same Fiat small platform, Fiat Grande Punto.
2008
MiTo was launched in two variants. Both came equipped with a trip computer, cruise control, air-conditioning, remote locking with boot release, steering wheel audio controls, front armrest with locker, leather steering wheel, VDC with hill holder, front electric windows, DNA, and a premium six-speaker audio system headlining the standard equipment package.
The standard MiTo is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 5-speed manual gearbox (88 kW, 206 N.m). It has a top speed of 198 km/h, enough to take the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds.
A 1368-cc 4-cylinder turbocharged engine also powers MiTo Sport, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox (114 kW, 230 N.m). It could reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 8.0 seconds and has a top speed of 215 km/h.
MiTo Sport gains Blue&Me Bluetooth telematics with a USB connection, climate control air conditioning, sports bumpers, spoiler and pedals, rear parking sensors, Brembo Brakes, auto wipers, lights and interior mirror as well as front fog lights.
It has high safety standards with seven airbags (front, side, curtain and driver's knee), self-aligning head restraints and hazard light activation during heavy braking.
2009-2010
In 2009, Alfa Romeo released a special version of MiTo and named it MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde. This four-leaf clover version of the sporty hatch balances sportiness and environment-friendliness. It is powered by a new engine and some extra driving aids to deliver a more exciting and sporty experience.
Alfa Romeo installed a four-cylinder Multiair TBi engine, 1368-cc engine mated to a six-speed C635 gearbox (126 kW) strong enough to propel the car from 0 to 100 km/h in under 7 seconds. The Quadrifoglio Verde is equipped with a new dynamic suspension designed exclusively for this car with the help of Magneti Marelli. The tri-mode package (normal/all-weather/dynamic) features electronic dampers that actively adjust to vehicle speed and road conditions to maintain optimum comfort, agility and safety. The car is finished exclusively in titanium-coloured paint.
Sydney police took the lead by announcing the induction of Alfa Romeo MiTo into their fleet. NSW department made it two MiTos into their fleet after already using Alfa Romeo GT Coupe. The unique Italian styling of the MiTo is certainly attracting its fair share of attention on the road, which, according to police, helps them connect with communities in a strategic effort to build stronger relationships.
2013-2014
Alfa updated the MiTo with a new engine and some interior and exterior changes as well. The restyled front grille made it look visually different from the previous version, and the car now resembles the Alfa Giulietta with its burnished headlights and new Anthracite Grey body colour.
The biggest change was the brand new engine, which was similar to one the used in the Fiat 500. The 'TwinAir' unit is a two-cylinder 875-cc engine paired with a 6-speed manual transmission (77 Kw, 145N.m), strong enough to reach 100 km/h in 11.4 sec, but the main talking point is its fuel consumption, which Alfa claimed to be 4.2 L/100 km.
Some more minor changes included a new Uconnect infotainment system features a five-inch colour touchscreen with Bluetooth audio streaming, text-to-voice SMS reader, and optional TomTom satellite navigation. New seat fabrics and dashboard materials complete the cabin refresh.
The MiTo was launched in Australia in January 2014 and was available in showrooms for people to buy. The Alfa offered four different versions to Australian customers.
- 2 Cylinder TwinAir 875 cc engine, 6-speed manual transmission (77 Kw, 145 N.m)
- 4 Cylinder TwinAir 1368 cc engine, 5-speed manual transmission (206 N.m)
- 4 Cylinder TwinAir 1368 cc engine, 6-speed dual-clutch TCT transmission (Progression)
- 4 Cylinder TwinAir 1368 cc engine, 6-speed dual-clutch TCT automatic transmission (Distinctive)
2015-2016
The Alfa Romeo MiTo never really caught the eye of a large number of customers, so in April 2016 after poor sales in 2015 and even worse results in the first quarter of 2016, the MiTo name was dropped from Alfa's Australian lineup.
With just four units sold until April 2016 and only 156 for all of 2015, the little hatchback practically faded into obscurity. In comparison, the Alfa Romeo has sold 177 units of the 4C sports car, while the MiTo hatchbacks sold 160 in 15 months from January 2015.
The top-spec MiTo QV (Quadrifoglio Verde) had sporty looks and more power under the skin. Its initial sales were good but soon outclassed by less-expensive, albeit less-Italian rivals.
