Audi A5

The Audi A5 is a compact executive or D segment class car in two-door coupe and convertible, and a 4-door Sportback variant, with a front-engine, front or all-wheel-drive layout. The A5 shares the B platform with Audi A4, deriving from the improved VW MLB platform.

The First Generation (2007-2016)

The A5 brings back the compact executive coupé to Audi’s lineup, a model missing since the Audi 80 coupé’s discontinuation in 1996. The Nuvolari Quattro concept has been used as the basis for the design, with a sleek and subtly aggressive look.

The official reveals of the coupé A5 and S5 was on the 6th of March, both at the Salon International de l’Auto in Geneva and the Melbourne International Motor Show.

The Convertible A5 and S5 arrived in 2009, replacing the A4 convertible. However, these convertibles were only available with a fabric roof and not with a hardtop.

The Sportback model features a fastback-looking roof combined with four frameless doors, sharing exterior features with the coupé, but more closely related to the A4 sedan.

In 2011, the A5 received a facelift with changes to the front and rear lights and front bumper, while the S5 got a 3.0 TFSI petrol engine, exterior, Quattro drive, and power steering updates.

The Audi A5 is available in Standard Trim, Technik, SE, Sport, S Line, Black Edition, and Black Edition Plus trim levels.

The Audi S5 offers a sportier alternative, with a different fascia design, 19-inch alloy wheels, and bigger brakes. The coupe came equipped with a 4.2L FSI V8 engine with a power output of 260kW (349hp), while the Cabriolet and Sportback had a 3.0L TFSI V6 engine with a power output of 245kW (329hp).

The Audi RS comes with a 4.2L FSI engine with a power output of 331kW (444hp) and 430Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed S-Tronic transmission and special Quattro drive system. Exterior differences with the A5 and S5 include a single-frame grille, redesigned bumper, flared fenders, and side sills with angular caps.

In Australia, the A5 came available with the following engine and transmission options:

The Second Generation (2016-present)

Revealed in June of 2016, the second generation A5 uses the 9th generation VW MLB platform and offers two diesel options, as well as seven petrol options. The redesign is subtle, modernizing the car and giving it a more aggressive look. Handling was improved, but it was lagging behind some of the competing models. On the other hand, it offered a comfortable ride and a great interior design.

The Audi A5 was available in SE, Black Edition, Vorsprung, S Line, S5, Sport, and Audi Sport Edition trim levels.

The Audi S5 came with a 3.0L TFSI turbocharged petrol engine paired with 8-speed automatic transmission, while the RS 5 Coupé came with a 2.9L TFSI V6 twin-turbo petrol engine and 8-speed automatic transmission. It received exterior changes to grille and fenders, making the car appear more aggressive.

In Australia, only two engine options were available:
