The Audi TT is a two-door coupé or roadster produced by the German carmaker since 1998 and is currently in its 3rd generation. Competing in the sports-car class, TT is characterized by a compact body and powerful inline-four and inline-five engines. It is based on the VW Group A platform, which the TT shared with several VW, Škoda, and SEAT models, as well as Audi A3. All generations incorporate front-engine, front-wheel or quattro four-wheel-drive layout, and MacPherson struts in the front to achieve fully independent suspension.

The First Generation (1998-2006)

At the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1995, Audi revealed their concept car for the TT, designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas. The name derives from the motorcycle race Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy), a traditional competition in which NSU took part with NSU 1000TT, 1200TT, and TTS cars.

Codenamed 8N, an official release of the first-generation coupé happened in 1998, while the roadster arrived a year later. As a basis, VW A4 (PQ34) platform was used, shared with VW Golf Mark 4, Bora, Jetta, and the New Beetle, Audi A3, Škoda Octavia, as well as SEAT Leon and Toledo. 

Little was changed from the original concept. However, a major recall happened in late 1999 to early 2000 as reports of fatal accidents related to loss of control at high speeds began emerging in the media. To fix the issue, Audi added their Electronic Stability Programme, Anti Slip Regulation, and a rear spoiler to the recalled vehicles as well as all future models. In 2003, it received a visual facelift together with additional equipment and automatic transmission for the front-wheel-drive models. 

The base equipment includes dual front and side front airbags, ABS, automatic air con/climate control, alarm/remote anti-theft, alloy wheels, CD player, RC central locking, front fog lights, leather upholstery, power mirrors/steering/windows, sound system with six speakers, and a trip computer.

The Quattro trim level adds four-wheel drive and the following additional features: 

Adjustable Steering Wheel (tilt & telescopic), Engine Immobiliser, Leather Steering Wheel, Sport Seats, Sports Suspension

The S-Line trim level with front-wheel drive adds: 

17 Inch Alloy Wheels, Electronic Stability Program, Electric Top, Metallic Paint, Rear Spoiler, Sports Suspension

The S-Line Quattro trim level with four-wheel drive is the top-of-the-line model and adds: 

18-Inch Alloy Wheels, ESP, Electric Top, Heated Front Seats, Metallic Paint, Rear Spoiler, Sport Seats, Premium Sound System, Sports Suspension, Xenon Headlights

Quattro gmbH, Audi’s high-performance division revealed a 2.7T quattro GmbH Concept for their 30th anniversary, Imola Yellow model with a 2.7L Bi-Turbo V6 petrol engine with a power output of 280kW (375hp) and 440Nm of torque. It used B5 RS4 as the basis, taking its engine, transmission, and several other parts, as well as Torsen 6-speed quattro drive, rather than Haldex. 

In Australia, the powertrain options available were:

• 1.8 T Base, a 1.8L Inline-4 DOHC turbocharged petrol engine producing 132kW (178hp) at 5500rpm and 235Nm of torque at 1950-5000rpm, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, and from 2003 with a 6-speed manual transmission
• 1.8 T Quattro, a 1.8L Inline-4 DOHC turbocharged petrol engine producing 165kW (222hp) at 5900rpm and 280Nm of torque at 2200-5500rpm, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox 

The Second Generation (2006-2014)

Codenamed 8J, the second generation has aluminium front panels, while steel was used in the rear, to provide a near 50-50 weight distribution. As before, it was available in front-wheel or quattro drive, coupé or roadster body type. Audi based it on the VW Group A5 (PQ35) platform, shared with the second-generation Audi A3, VW Golf Mark 5 and Jetta, SEAT Leon, Toledo, and Altea, as well as the second-generation Škoda Octavia.

The second generation came in two high-performance variants, the TTS and TT RS. While the Audi TTS quattro used a heavily revised 2.0 TFSI engine and produced 200kW, the TT RS used a brand new 2.5L Inline-Five petrol engine with a turbocharger and outputted 250kW. TTS arrived in Australia, but the TT RS was never offered. 

The base trim level includes the following equipment:

This package was further expanded by the facelift, adding cruise control, dusk-sensing headlights, EBD, leather/multi-function steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, and traction control system.

The Quattro trim level adds: 

18-Inch Alloy Wheels, Cruise Control, CD with 6-CD Stacker, Satellite Navigation, Premium Sound System, Xenon Headlights

The TTS trim level adds:

Adaptive Damping Control, 18-Inch Alloy Wheels, Cruise Control, Parking Distance Control Rear, Power front seats, Xenon Headlights, TT-RS Body Kit, Fixed Rear Spoiler, Alcantara or Leather Sports Seats

The powertrain options available in Australia were:

• 1.8 TFSI Base, 1.8L Inline-4 16v DOHC Turbocharged petrol engine with Fuel Stratified Injection, producing 118kW (158hp) at 4500-6200rpm and 250Nm of torque at 1500-4500, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission or 6-speed manual gearbox, and front-wheel drive
• 2.0 TFSI Base, 2.0L Inline-4 16v DOHC Turbocharged petrol engine with Fuel Stratified Injection, producing 147kW (197hp) at 5100-6000rpm and 280Nm of torque at 1800-5000rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, or 6-speed manual gearbox and quattro drive, available from 2006 to 2010
• 2.0 TFSI Base, 2.0L Inline-4 16v DOHC Turbocharged petrol engine with Fuel Stratified Injection, producing 155kW (211hp) at 5300-6000rpm and 280Nm of torque at 1700-5000rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, or 6-speed manual gearbox and quattro drive, available from 2008
• 2.0 TFSI Base, 2.0L Inline-4 16v DOHC Turbocharged petrol engine with Fuel Stratified Injection, producing 155kW (211hp) at 4300-6000rpm and 350Nm of torque at 1600-4200rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, or 6-speed manual gearbox and quattro drive, available from 2010
• 2.0 TFSI TTS, 2.0L Inline-4 16v DOHC Turbocharged petrol engine with Fuel Stratified Injection, producing 200kW (268hp) and 350Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox or 6-speed automatic transmission and quattro drive
• 2.0 TDI Base, 2.0L Inline-4 16v DOHC Turbocharged diesel engine with Direct Injection, producing 125kW (168hp) at 4200rpm and 350Nm of torque at 1750-2500rpm, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and quattro drive
• 3.2 V6 Quattro, 3.2L VR6 24v DOHC petrol engine with multi-point sequential indirect fuel injection, producing 184kW (247hp) at 6300rpm and 320Nm of torque at 2500-3000rpm, paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and quattro drive

The Third Generation (2014-present)

Codenamed FV/8S, the current model TT has roots in the Audi Allroad Shooting Brake Concept, while the official reveal happened at the Geneva Motor Show in 2014. The new design direction combines the aspects of the previous models and grows in wheelbase thanks to the new VW Group MQB platform, shared with Audi A3, VW Golf Mark 7, SEAT Leon and Škoda Octavia.

The new TT is available in both coupé and roadster variants and comes with the following Base equipment:

• TT RS, with a 2.5L turbocharged petrol engine producing 294kW and 480Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission
