The Ford Ranger (codenamed T6) is a car designed and engineered by Ford in Australia. The newer generation Ranger consolidated worldwide production into a single platform, replacing the South/North American 1998-2012 Ranger. Its unveiling took place at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show, but production began in the summer of 2011. Ford came up with a restyled version of the Ranger T6 and marketed it as the Mazda BT-50 pickup truck.
An Overview
The Ranger T6 comes in three body styles, i.e., a two-door single-cab, four-door extended cab, and a four-door crew cab. Here's one interesting fact about the Ranger: All four-door cabs have the same ground clearance whether it's a four-wheel-drive or two-wheel-drive (Hi-Rider option). The T6 Ranger's towing capacity is 3,500 kg, but those fitted with the 2.2l Duratorq diesel engine can only manage 1,333 kilograms.
You can easily differentiate a Ranger T6 produced after 2015 from its predecessors by looking at the front fascia - post-2015 models have a slightly oval grille with a single centre bar, while its predecessors have a rectangular three-bar grille.
Trim Levels
The Ranger T6 comes in three basic trim levels - the XL, XLS, and XLT.
1. Wildtrak
Ford released the Wildtrak as a special edition of the Ranger. The Wildtrak is based on the four-wheel-drive crew cab and comes with a 3.2L Duratorq engine. To visually distinguish the Wildtrak, Ford opted for 18-inch wheels and a dark-grey model-specific grille, among other features.
2. Raptor
The Ford Raptor had its introduction in 2018 as an upcoming 2019 production model. Ford designed it as a high-performance off-road vehicle. Ford settled on a 2.0L EvcoBlue bi-turbo diesel engine powered by a 10-speed automatic transmission for the Raptor. This four-wheel-drive truck saw the "FORD" insignia in block letters replacing the Ford Blue Oval sign on the grille.
Powertrains
The petrol engines used in the Ranger include the following:
1. 2.3L EcoBoost DOHC 16-valve inline-four turbocharged direct-injection engine with a maximum power output of 200 kW and a torque of 420 Nm
2. 2.5L Duratec DOHC 16-valve inline-four petrol engine with a maximum power output of 122 kW and a torque of 226 Nm
The diesel engines used are:
1. 2.3L Duratorq TDCi (ZSD-422) 16-valve inline-four turbocharged direct-injection engine with a maximum power output of 88 kW and a torque of 420 Nm (more recent versions produce 92 kW and 330 Nm or 110 kW and 375 Nm)
2. 3.2L Duratorq TDCi (P5AT) 20-valve inline-five turbocharged engine with a maximum power output of 197 kW and a torque of 470 Nm
3. 3.2L EcoBlue 16-valve inline-four turbocharged and bi-turbocharged engines with maximum power outputs of 130 kW and 157 kW and a torque of 420 Nm and 500 Nm, respectively
These engines come with either a 5-speed/6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed/10-speed automatic transmission.
