The Holden Equinox is a midsize crossover SUV developed by Chevrolet and sold in Australia by Holden from 2017. Though the Equinox was introduced in Australia only in 2017, it had been in production since 2004.
The Original Equinox
The Equinox was initially introduced at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show. It went on sale in 2004 as a 2005 model. After that, in 2005, the Pontiac Torrent, which bore some resemblance to the Equinox, was shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model. The Equinox runs on the GM Theta platform, making the unibody mechanically similar to the Suzuki XL-7 and Saturn Vue. For the first-generation Equinox (from 2005-2009), GM went with two powertrains, viz.:
- A 3.4L LNJ V6 engine that attains maximum power output of 138kW and a torque of 285 Nm
- A 3.6L LY7 V6 engine that achieves peak power of 197 kW and a torque of 339 Nm (introduced in 2008)
GM offered sportier versions of the Torrent and Equinox for the 2008 and 2009 model years, called the all-wheel-drive GXP and Sport, respectively. These models were fitted with the all-new 3.6 L LY7 DOHC V6 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission (maximum power output of 197 kW). Some of the additional features added to these trims included heated leather seats, navigation, and a sunroof.
Later on, GM announced the second-generation Equinox in 2008 and unveiled it at the 2010 North America International Auto Show. Some of the improvements made on the second generation (2008-2017), included upgraded and more economical gasoline direct injection engines. There were three engines used, namely:
- A 2.4L Ecotec LAF I4 engine which achieved a maximum power output of 136 kW and a torque of 233 Nm
- A 2.4L Ecotec LEA I4 engine which produced a maximum power output of 136 kW and a torque of 233 Nm
- A 3.0L High Feature LF1 or LFW V6 engine, which attains peak power of 224 kW and torque of 301 Nm
- A 3.0L V6 High Feature LFX engine, which attains peak power of 224 kW and a torque of 369 Nm
Holden Equinox in Australia (2017-present)
GM launched the third-generation Holden Equinox in Australia in 2017. This crossover SUV was based on the GMD2XX platform. Its specifications include additional safety features like surround-view cameras, automatic braking, and forward-collision warning.
The third-generation Equinox was also available in an AWD trim level, the LTZ-V, which will be discontinued after the 2019 model year. The engines used in the Equinox include the following:
- A 1,490cc 1.5L T4 engine that produced 127 kW in power and a torque of 275 Nm, which is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission
- A 1,998 2.0L T4 engine that attains maximum power of 188 kW and a torque of 353 Nm, which is paired to a 9-speed manual transmission
