Now might be the best time for you to buy new tyres. It’s the holiday season. Many retailers see holiday deals as a surefire way to increase sales and revenue. And holiday shoppers (aka you and I) take them up on their offer by letting loose and going on shopping frenzies.
However, when we go about doing our holiday shopping, our focus is usually fixated around a few product ranges—food, holiday décor, games, electronic gift items, and a slew of seasonal merchandises. Nobody thinks "now’s the best time to get cheap new tyres or any other auto parts online.” Lost opportunity there, I must say! You’ve been passing up on a lot of savings offers, but woe not, there’s good news.
If you think holiday deals and discounts end with the Christmas sale, you are very much mistaken. Yes, the 2020 holiday season started way back October with Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and now it’s past Christmas and even Boxing Day. But after-holiday sales will likely continue until the first two weeks of New Year. In other words, you've still got time to snap up awesome auto part deals.
But Do You Need New Tyres Yet?
Frankly, for some people, tyres might not be a necessary investment at this time. For some others, it might be just what they need. Here are a few things to keep in mind before buying new tyres.
The average life span of a quality tyre is about 50,000 miles (80,000 km). This typically translates to about 3-4 years. It could be a little higher or much lower, depending on how you drive. If you’re one to drive like you’re a star actor in a road-racing Hollywood blockbuster, you’ll need tyre replacements more often.
Tyre treads are a critical gauge. A tyre’s tread is possibly the most telling indicator in determining the tyre’s fitness. It’s second only to the tyre’s expiration date. So, learn to recognise thin treads, uneven wear, and the likes on your tyres.
Regular maintenance will do your tyres a wealth of good. Uneven wear is one of the most common (but totally avoidable) causes of tyre damage. To ensure your tyres wear evenly, do your wheel balancing and alignment exercise as often as necessary. Ideally, your auto technician should advise you on when these services are required, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
Tyres have an expiry date. Your tyre’s treading might be perfect. But if your tyre is past its expiry date, it’s no longer fit for use. This means two things: First, don’t buy and store new tyres if you don’t plan to use them in the near future. Inspect the tyres on your wheels to ensure they are not near or past expiration date (typically 6 years after manufacture date). You may jump to this article to figure out the age of your tyres.
Wrap-up
There’s still enough time to benefit from auto part holiday sales. So visit your go-to physical or online store and find out what big saving deals they still have available for you.
