Before the launch of the F-Pace in 2016, roles between Jaguar and Land Rover were strictly divided. Jaguar was known for luxury and sports cars, while Land Rover was (and still is) all about SUVs and off-roading. However, the huge popularity of luxury SUVs and crossovers forced Jaguar to develop its own SUV as well.
So out came the Jaguar F-Pace, which represents the British manufacturer in the segment where key players are Germans – BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi Q5.
The Jaguar F-Pace is a compact SUV, but it is an entirely different story from Land Rover models, even though they are part of the same company. The F-Pace isn't particularly capable off the road. It is focused on the road and on things like comfort and handling. In other words, it is a sports car trapped in the body of an SUV.
The First Generation of Jaguar F-Pace
The first time we saw this SUV was in 2015, when the prototype appeared as a part of the Team Sky cycling team. The production version had its premiere a few months later at Frankfurt Motor Show. Finally, the first deliveries started in May 2016 in Europe, while the Jaguar F-Pace Australia debuted later in the year, also as the 2016 model.
Design and Features
The Jaguar F-Pace was the company's first SUV, and it has brought many exciting design solutions. One of the first things that come to mind is the use of lightweight materials. About 80% of the body is made from aluminium, while composite materials and magnesium have also been used. As a result, the lightest versions weigh just around 1,775 kg.
Although classified as a compact SUV, this is actually a pretty big vehicle. It features 2,874 millimetres in wheelbase, while the total length goes up to 4,731mm. Interestingly, the F-Pace features 1,936mm in width, which makes it wider than Lamborghini Urus.
The suspension setup is another interesting aspect of this SUV. As we've just mentioned, it's nothing like Land Rover models. You won't find any rigid or rudimental suspension components, which are typical for off-road vehicles.
Instead, the F-Pace features a pretty sophisticated setup borrowed directly from the F-Type sports car. It features a double-wishbone at the front, while the rear end comes with a new subframe and mounted multi-link system, called Integral Link. As a result, the handling is pretty engaging, and the F-Pace acts somewhat like a sports car, even though ground clearance isn't all that low at all (207mm).

Interior
The first thing that comes to mind with Jaguar models is luxury, and indeed, the Jaguar F-Pace interior looks pretty luxurious. Materials and build quality are impressive. There is a fair amount of tech features, though we have to mention that pre-facelifted models (2016-2020) feature an older-generation TouchPro infotainment system. Newer models come with JLR’s new Pivi interface, but we will get on that later.
What’s more impressive about this cabin is the space. Thanks to its long wheelbase, the F-Pace comes with two very comfortable rows, where the rear seats accommodate adult passengers with ease. Furthermore, it offers one of the largest cargo areas in the class. There’s a 650-litre luggage area behind the second row, while total volume goes all the way to 1,740 litres with rear-row seats folded.
Jaguar F-Pace Engines
The initial 2016 model came with four powertrain options – two diesel and two petrol engines.
The base engine is a 2.0-L four-cylinder turbodiesel, with a max output of 132kW and 430Nm. A bigger, 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel features a max output of 221kW and 700Nm. The company claims a fuel economy of around 6l/100km with the V6, while the turbo-four is even more efficient.
Both petrol versions have a 3.0-litre V6 engine under the bonnet, with 250kW or 280kW of max power output.
All engines are paired with an 8-speed ZF transmission.
In 2017, the company introduced another petrol version, equipped with a 2.0-litre turbo-four, with a max output of 184kW and 365Nm of max torque.
Jaguar F-Pace SVR
For the 2019 model year, the British carmaker introduced a high-performance version called Jaguar F-Pace SVR. The key feature of this model is a muscular 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 engine, which features a max output of 405kW and 680Nm of max torque. It only needs 4.3 seconds to hit 100km/h.
Besides a more powerful engine, this version also comes with sport-tuned suspension and more precise steering. Of course, there are also several exclusive styling details accentuating the model's high-performance character.

Facelift (2021-present)
After five years of production, it was time for changes. Therefore, the 2021 Jaguar F-Pace came with several notable updates. Of course, the most notable are aesthetical changes, as there is a new grille design, a new bonnet, to name a few.
The dashboard came with a couple of novelties on the inside, but what’s far more important is the new infotainment system. The old TouchPro interface was replaced with the new-generation Pivi infotainment system. The new interface is better in every aspect – it is faster, offers sharper graphics, and is far more intuitive.
Probably the biggest change of this refresh is a new engine option. The older-generation 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine has been replaced with a new 3.0-litre inline-six, which is smoother and more efficient. Interestingly, it comes equipped with both a supercharger and turbocharger and a 48-Volt mild-hybrid system, which improves fuel economy and throttle response. It also comes in two output variants – with 250kW or 294kW.
This refresh has also made this SUV slightly more expensive, as the Jaguar F-Pace price starts at around $76,300.
What should I check when buying a used Jaguar F-Pace?
Here are some issues you need to know about the Jaguar F-Pace, especially if you’re buying it secondhand.
Low resale value
If we look at the prices of used Jaguar F-Pace models, it turns out that this SUV doesn't hold its value particularly well, which is a typical thing for JLR models. If you wonder why – it’s one of the least reliable car makes in the world.
However, things are far from terrible in this case, especially when compared to some older-generation Jaguar models. So, if you find a good example, buying a used F-Pace may actually be a pretty good deal.
Past recalls
Besides typical JLR issues, such as electrics and oil leaks, there are few more potential issues with the F-Pace. For example, the 2017 model year had problems with the rear drivetrain shaft. Of course, the company issued a recall, but you need to make sure to find out if the owner has brought his F-Pace for inspection or not.
Common issues in past models
If you’re looking for models with V6 engines, make sure to check for fuel pump and fuel leaks. Some examples could have problems with overheating as well. Finally, check the infotainment system, as bugs are a common thing with the older TouchPro interface.
