Mercedes-Benz MB100/MB140

The Mercedes-Benz MB100 (Model type 631), nicknamed Cutter, is a front-engined, front-wheel-drive panel van, minibus, and flatbed produced in Vitoria-Gasteiz factory in Spain from 1981 to 1996. Its predecessor was N1000 van, with a successor in the Vito.

At 5.1m long, 1.85m wide, and 2.5m high, the MB100 is a good option for city transport as it could pass through height restrictions and enter enclosed garages, as well as a park on a car-sized space. The nine-seater minibus variant has a kerb weight of 1.725kg, allowing plenty of cargo before reaching the category limit.

Since 1987, an additional 2.4L diesel engine producing 55kW (73hp) became available for the MB100D model. Other improvements include a front-angled radiator section for better passive safety, disc brakes, and an automatic load braking system. Mercedes-Benz made a fuel-cell electric motor version of the MB100 with a power output of 30kW (41hp), a top speed of 90km/h, and a range of 100 kilometres.

AMG decided to work on the MB100, and in 1989 released AMG MB100D, as a large luxury sedan. It featured hydraulic steering, custom AMG dashboard with tachometer, Alcantara leather seats, folding tables, and side cladding. Externally, front spoiler bumper, radiator grille, and headlights were revised. Optional equipment included telephone and video systems, as well as carpeted floors.

Powertrain options include 2.2L and 2.3L DOHC inline-four petrol engines, 2.4L OHC inline-four and 2.9L OHC inline-five diesel engines, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. In Australia, all options except the 2.2L petrol engine were available.

MB100 and the larger version MB140 (Model type 661) get introduced in the Pacific and Australian markets in 1999. Available in both left-hand and right-hand drive, it was produced under license in Korea by SsangYong, sharing much of its identity with SsangYong Istana. It was cheaper to manufacture but lacking in the expected Mercedes-Benz quality standard.

Its passenger versions were popular transporters as they seated up to 15 people depending on the layout. It is a rugged working vehicle with an interior made out of cheaper plastic. It has an imperfect finish but spacious, with decent head and legroom for all passengers.

In Australia, it offered a cheaper alternative to the Japanese, American, and VW competitors, making it a popular choice for a cab-forward light commercial vehicle. However, the front-configuration of the engine bay posed serious safety issues. For this reason and due to stricter emissions regulations, both the MB100 and MB140 fell out of favour after 2005.

Today, while it comes nowhere close to the fame that the Volkswagen Transporter enjoys, it still has its niche fanbase that finds the boxy design and features appealing. Combined with a modification-friendly interior, it makes the perfect cheap camper-van option.
