Introducing the Nissan 370Z (Z34), what Nissan refers to as the 'super-evolution' of its predecessor, the Nissan 350Z. Read up about the 350Z and you see just how much of an improvement the 370S is over its older sibling.
The 370Z is the latest in the long line of Nissan's Z-car series that traces its roots all the way back to 1969. Also known as the 'Fairlady Z' in its homeland Japan, this two-wheel-drive sports car was designed by Randy Rodriguez and Diane Allen of Nissan Design America. Allen was also the designer of the 350Z, this car's predecessor.
The Nissan 370Z was first announced in 2006, a few years before it finally reached Australian shores in 2009. The newer 370Z was smaller in size, though it had a much tougher aesthetic overall.
Its exterior boasts of dusk-sensing arrowhead headlights, boomerang taillights, and chrome door handles and exhaust tips. It has a luxurious interior fitted with comfortable sports seats and leather upholstery. And it isn't all about good looks and exceptional performance; the 370Z is also chock-full of safety features like traction control system and vehicle stability control, not to mention the head, side, and dual front airbags as well.
When the Australian market first saw the 370Z in 2009, the base model carried a naturally-aspirated 3.7-litre V6 engine with a max power output of 245 kW and 363 Nm of torque. This engine would be used in most versions of the 370Z.
This powertrain was paired with either a 7-speed Jatco auto transmission or a 6-speed FS6R31A manual gearbox. The 370Z transmission was unique as it came equipped with the SynchroRev system (for the manual variant only), Nissan's synchronised downshift rev-matching system explicitly designed for the 370Z. The SynchroRev system consists of a bunch of sensors, all working in tandem with the engine control unit (ECU) to help drivers execute perfect downshifts.
Initially, Australia only had the coupe version of the 370Z available in 2009. But from 2010 onward, both coupe and convertible variants could be found on the Aussie market as well.
In 2017, the NISMO Coupe version was made available in Australia. Sadly, some reviewers weren't too impressed. To them, this coupe version seemed to be trapped in time. It had outdated interior and features for a 2017 model, lacking a CD player and smartphone connectivity. As disappointing as it may have been, the car still delivered on its promised high performance which was its main selling point anyway. Thanks to some fine-tuning done by Nismo, this version had a slightly higher power output of 253 kW and peak torque of 371 Nm, a full 8 kW and 8 Nm more than the base version of the 370Z.
In 2018, the black-and-yellow limited-edition N-Sport Coupe version emerged. When Nissan decided to make this a limited-edition version, they weren't playing around! Only 50 units were ever made available in Australia. This version is highly recognisable, thanks to its bright yellow and black exterior, contrasting decals, black side mirrors, and even yellow interior highlights. Topping it all off are its exclusive black 18-inch alloy wheels! This version carried the same 3.7-litre naturally aspirated V6 engine with a maximum output of 245 kW and 363 Nm of torque.
The most recent version of this car to be released in Australia is the 2020 Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary version. This one comes in only two colour options: one with a white body paired with a red roofline and red decals, and a silver-bodied version with a black roofline and black decals. This car also has 19-inch alloy wheels with a thin red line. Inside, this car stands out from other versions of the 370Z with unique detailing on its seats and 50th Anniversary badges all over the place. Again, this version uses the same naturally-aspirated 3.7-litre V6 engine found on most variants, with a maximum output of 245 kW of power and 363 Nm of torque.
It almost doesn't matter what Nissan decides to do next with the 370Z, or the Z-car series as a whole. In Australia and elsewhere, this car has already earned its status as a classic. There's no doubt that it will continue to be an iconic Nissan model for many more years to come.
