The Holden Zafira is a rebadged version of the first-generation Opel Zafira A, first revealed at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1997. It is a 5-door compact minivan produced from 1999 to 2005 with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, based on the T-body platform shared with the Opel Astra G.
Even though the production continued into the second-generation Zafira B, it was discontinued entirely in Australia. In 2000, the Zafira won the 3rd place in the European Car of the Year competition.
It has space for seven seats, but the rear two seats have cramped legroom and are only suitable for children. However, it features adjustable seats and steering wheel, and offers a high seat and good ground clearance.
The Zafira's standard equipment include dual front airbags, anti-lock braking, air-conditioning, adjustable steering wheel (tilt and telescopic), cruise control, central locking remote control, electronic brake-force distribution, engine immobilizer, power mirrors/steering/front windows, radio CD with 6 speakers, roof racks, seatbelts with pre-tensioners (front seats).
The powertrain options available in Australia include a 2.2L petrol engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox (108kW and 203 Nm).
The 2003 facelift introduced a new trim level called Equipe and more features were added as standard, including 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, metallic paint, and a trip computer.
The Euro NCAP gave the Holden Zafira a 3-star rating. The model that Euro NCAP tested was equipped with driver and passenger airbags, optional side bags and traction control systems.
In 2013 in Australia the Zafira was sold through Opel dealerships. It was based on the Delta II platform, the same one used by the Mk.4 Astra.
Two trim levels were available, namely the Tourer and Tourer Luxury, both of which came with these standard items and equipment:
