The French automaker Peugeot manufactured the 206 from 1998 to the present day as a supermini car with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout in a 3 and 5-door hatchback, 2-door coupé cabriolet, 5-door station wagon and 4-door sedan body styles.
It was initially revealed as a hatchback with either a petrol or diesel engine that came later in HDi common-rail version. It was available in both automatic and manual transmission system.
Not only was it produced in France, but also the UK, Iran, Chile, Mexico and Columbia. It was the best-selling car all over Europe from 2001 to 2003, and 1.4L XR proved to be a sales success.
In Australia, the Peugeot 206 was popular from 1999 to 2007 with GTi, XR, XT, XRS, XTS, GTi Rallye, and GTi 180 available in hatchback, and the CC was available in a convertible version.

In 2001, the CC trim level appeared in convertible body-type and added 15-inch alloy wheels, EBD, electric top, leather steering wheel, and adjustable sports seats. In 2005, it appeared in a hatchback body-type.
XRS trim level appeared the same year with the same equipment.
In 2002, the GTi Rallye appeared in hatchback body type and added 16-inch alloy wheels, body kit, and a rear spoiler.
In 2004, Peugeot rolled out the GTi 180, which added 17-inch alloy wheels, brake assist, leather upholstery, trip computer, and traction control system.
The engine options available in Australia were:
- GTi and GTi Rallye, 2.0L petrol engine producing 102kW and 194 Nm of torque paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox
- XR and XT, 1.6L petrol engine producing 67kW and 137 Nm of torque paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox or 4-speed auto transmission
- From 2001 XR, XT, XTS, XRS, and CC (hatchback) came with a 1.6L petrol engine producing 82kW and 147 Nm of torque paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox
- CC (convertible), 1.6L petrol engine producing 80kW and 147 Nm of torque paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox
- CC (convertible), 2.0L petrol engine producing 100kW and 190 Nm of torque paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox
- From 2002 XR came with a 1.4L petrol engine producing 55kW and 120 Nm of torque paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual gearbox
- GTi 180, 2.0L petrol engine producing 130kW and 202 Nm of torque paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox
The Peugeot 206 was available in several variants, namely, 206 CC (Coupé Cabriolet), Grand Tourisme, GTi 180 and RC, 206 SD (Sedan), 206 Escapade, Citroën C2 and Naza 206 Bestari of which only 206 CC was produced for the Australian market.
The Peugeot 206 CC was produced from 2001 to 2007 in France, and it was available as a 2-door convertible with a front-wheel-drive layout. Based on the 206 hatchback, it had MacPherson front suspension and independent rear suspension. It had a retractable hardtop roof made of two panels being operated by power, lowering and raising at the speed of 30 seconds approximately.
The powertrain options available were 1.6L petrol engine producing 80kW and 147 Nm of torque paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed auto transmission, and 2.0L petrol engine producing 100kW and 190 Nm of torque paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
In the EuroNCAP crash tests, the Peugeot 206 was rated with 4 of 5 stars in adult occupant safety and 2 of 4 stars for pedestrian safety. Safety equipment includes front seatbelt pretensioners, front seatbelt load limiters, driver’s frontal airbag, and front passenger’s frontal airbag.
