Volvo 940/ Volvo 960

Volvo 940 and 960 belong to the Volvo 900 Series produced from 1990 to 1998 by the Volvo Cars. It succeeded the 700 Series with changes in the rear styling of the saloon models. Volvo introduced the 940 in 1990 followed by the 960, which featured new modular engines. Later, the 960 would become the Volvo S90 and V90.

Volvo 940 (1990-1998)

Volvo 940 is an executive car produced from 1990 to 1998 by Volvo Cars as a 4-door saloon or a 5-door estate. It was the last Volvo with a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. It succeeded the 740 but retained much of its features, including the dashboard, drivetrain options, and sheet metal from the A-pillar forward.

In Australia, it came in sedan and wagon body types with GLE, Turbo, GL, SE Turbo, and S trims. The 940 remained in the market from 1990 to 1996 and was offered in the following engine options:

Standard equipment for the base model included a driver's airbag, ABS, air conditioning, central locking, power steering, power windows, front fog lights, and radio cassette with six speakers.

Higher-spec trim levels offered alloy wheels and leather trim on top of the base features.

Volvo 960 (1991-1998)

Volvo 960 was introduced in 1991 as the replacement for the 760.

From 1992 to 1994, the 960 received various interior changes, including more shapely seats, new seatbelts with hydraulic pretensioners, an ergonomic shifter, dual front airbags, and a sliding sunshade and glass window in place of the previous opaque sunroof.

A facelift in 1995 introduced a redesigned grille and body-coloured panels.

The following engines powered the 960 in Australia:

The base model came with driver's airbag, ABS, automatic air conditioning, power front seats, and automatic/self-levelling suspension.

The GLE added alloy wheels, cruise control, central locking, leather trim, power steering, power sunroof, power windows, and radio cassette.

The SE added passenger airbag, alarm system, CD player, power mirrors, power sunroof, and radio cassette with six speakers.

From 1996, the 960 was renamed S90 for the saloon and V90 for the hatchback, which applied in Australia from 1997. Along with the new name, the S90/V90 received an improved air conditioning system. It was available in either SE or Royal trim level, but its production was interrupted in 1998. Production would resume in 2016 but with new trim levels and powertrain.

S90/V90

Volvo S90 is an executive, mid-size luxury sedan produced from 2016, manufactured by Volvo Cars in a 4-door sedan body style, with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive layout.

The S90 had its debut in 2016 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It won the Production Car Design award for that year.

It is available in Australia with the following powertrain options:

The D4 Momentum and T5 Momentum models are well-appointed with standard equipment packages often offered as added options in other brands. But since this is a luxury Volvo, it's not at all surprising. Some of the notable features in the base model are 4-zone climate control, Apple Car Play, adaptive headlights with auto levelling and cornering, AutoPilot, 18-inch alloy wheels, active/intelligent cruise control, driver awareness alert, intrusion sensor, traffic sign recognition, and whiplash protection system.

The D5 Inscription and T6 Inscription add 19-inch alloy wheels, Nappa Leather, and special identifying badging to the base model.

The T8 R-Design Hybrid adds air suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and a subwoofer.

The V90, the hatchback variant of the S90, is offered with the same engine and similar trim levels.
