Volvo V50 was revealed in 2003 at the Bologna Motor Show as a successor of the Volvo S40 in a 5-door station wagon body style. It was manufactured by the Volvo Cars between 2003 and 2012, while in Australia it appeared in 2004 and stayed until 2015. It was built on the Ford C1 platform, featuring a front-engine, front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive layout with either 2.5L T5 inline-5 turbocharged petrol engine providing 162 kW and 320 Nm of torque or 2.4L D5 inline-5 turbocharged diesel engine producing 132 kW and 350 Nm of torque. Furthermore, it was also equipped with so-called theatre lighting, "Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture" and a floating centre stack.

In Australia, the V50 was available in a wagon body style and equipped with the following powertrain options:

The 2.4 trim level featured dual front, head and side airbags, anti-lock braking system, auto climate control with dual temp zones, 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, central locking remote control, electronic brake force distribution, front fog lights, engine immobiliser, power mirrors/steering/windows, radio CD with six speakers, seatbelt pretensioners (front), and traction control system.
