What Makes Toyota Supras So Fast?

What Makes Toyota Supras So Fast?

Two years ago, a 1994 Toyota Supra sold for $121,000 in the US market.

That’s a lot, right? While this one was a rare piece and had all its original components still intact, it still shows how Supra is a vehicle sought after by many fans.

What’s so special about Toyota Supra? Let’s find out!

Why is Toyota Supra so popular?

Clearly recognised as Toyota's most famous sports car, Toyota Supra was first launched in 1978 as the Celica Supra since the vehicle was actually a Toyota Celica. Owing to its powerful 2.6-litre inline-six engine, it became an instant hit.

Toyota Supra's second generation came in 1981, and the live rear axle of the previous Supra was replaced with semi-trailing arms which made it an even better vehicle.

The third generation that came in 1986 took a new turn and even let go of the Celica name, upgrading the engine from a 2.8 to a 3.0-litre inline-six engine, making it even more powerful.

This was followed by the fourth generation in 1993 when Toyota completely changed the look of the Supra, making it sleeker and more modern.

Which model years are the best Toyota Supras?

The 1982 Toyota Celica Supra

With the creation of this model, a new generation of Supras came into being. With a horsepower of 108kW, this Supra was considered a robust and reliable vehicle. The A60 had a much more improved interior and a better suspension system. It was the first mainstream performance car brought in the market by Toyota.

It came into the industry at a time when most of the auto manufacturers were focusing on getting a competitive edge in terms of price in the sports car sector. The 1982 Toyota Supra carved the Supra’s foundation and space in the market. From here, the successful journey of Toyota Supra continued.

The 1994 Toyota Supra

The 1994 Toyota Supra, also called ‘the illegal Supra’ has been banned by the NHTSA due to long-term reliability concerns. It is not street legal anymore, even if you try to import it. Has that affected the popularity of Toyota Supra? Clearly not!

After the fourth generation, when Toyota Supra stopped production in 2002, fans all over the world were disappointed and were eagerly waiting for Toyota to resume production. This teasing from Toyota made the vehicle even more popular!

Fortunately, its hiatus ended, and Toyota Supra is back in the market with the new fifth-generation, better and faster this time.

The 2020 Toyota Supra

A sneak peek under the hood!

The new 2020 Toyota Supra is here and has been jointly developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing and BMW using the chassis of the BMW Z4 roadster.

For how much can you get a 2020 Toyota Supra for in Australia?

Toyota Supra 2020 has two trim levels to offer. The base variant, Toyota GR Supra GT is the first trim and will cost $93,730 driveaway, while the higher-priced variant Toyota GR Supra GTS has a driveaway of $104,379.

If you remove the ‘on-road' charges, the GR Supra GT will cost $84,900, and GR Supra GTS will cost $94,900. It might sound like a lot, but Toyota has justified it by how fast and compact this Supra is!

Its 3.0-litre inline-6 features a twin-scroll turbocharger, capable of producing 250kW and 500Nm of torque. No doubt, this Toyota Supra generation beats the previous generation being more powerful, faster, and lighter.

How fast is the Toyota Supra 2020?

250km/hr – that’s how fast a Supra can go! Don’t get too excited though; you won't be legally allowed to test it up to 250km/hr on our streets! Supra’s 500Nm torque and the sticky tyres allow it to sprint from standstill to 100km/hr in 4.3 seconds by using the inbuilt launch control, and that is how quick it is.

What’s more, the new Supra delivers even better performance than the power that it claims. This has been a pattern for BMW vehicles even before, and since this is a vehicle made in collaboration, we can see the same pattern even here. For example, its acceleration time leaves behind some more popular and expensive sports cars such as a Porsche Cayman GTS or a Chevy Corvette! How excited would you be to try one of these?

What makes the Toyota Supra 2020 so fast?

Like we've mentioned, the 500Nm torque and 250kW power push the Toyota Supra 2020 to be this fast. Not just this, it also has race-inspired Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyre as standard. The Toyota GT has an 18-inch alloy wheel where a GTS has 19-inch alloy wheels which allow it to have a solid grip, making it easier for drivers to use the vehicle to its full capacity.

What’s next for the Toyota Supra?

The 2021 Toyota Supra

Well, the fifth generation will also keep improving, won’t it? It is predicted that the Toyota Supra 2021 is going to open for bookings soon and will produce a power of 285kW, a jump of 35kW from the previous model. If so, it could mean that the acceleration time would be even shorter than 4.3 seconds! With an updated suspension system and increased performance, this model is also all set to make its ground.
